I don't know what your mud is like since I have never been in it. However I have ridden with 400 and 500's that could all ways spin the tires in the worst muck we have around here. I have seen Honda's not be able to spin the tires.

Unlike on ice were wheel spin is bad for traction. In some mud situations you need wheel speed for the tires to throw the mud off and grab more mud as it turn another revolution. Hope that makes sense. When tires get caked up in mud they have almost no traction.

I bought those as recommended by the shop where I got them. Without doing clutch work you can go one size bigger. Then again, the 400 is nor a powerhouse. It crawls over a lot. I do a lot of old logging roads in northern Manitoba with granite shards and other sharp rocks. They are holding up real well and are very good in snow. There is the odd mud hole that I hit and have no issues with traction for the most part. Low gear and clearance is your friend. My 400 has gone where my neighbours Grizzly 660 could not without a tow. He ended up putting on bigger tires and then snapped the front axles.

Yep that's exactly my fear - that the 500 won't be able to spin the tires clean. I think she'll do well with 26" HTR's though.

Cayman thanks for the info on your tires. Sounds like you do a lot of driving similar to mine. I like slow crawls in the rough stuff.

If you put in a clutch kit or get clutch work it is a non issue. I could pull wheelies on command in low. I ran 25" stock tires, 26" mudlites, 28" outlaw mst and 29.5"outlaws.

Wrong answer!! You were supposed to tell me that the 500 is a much nicer machine. Now I'm getting buyer's remorse!!

Power steering!! The 500 was an awesome machine and the most reliable machine of any type I have ever had. Zero problems in 7 years.

That's better!

Did you have the steerlites in the 500? If so, how much improvement resulted?

Read my signature and it tells the story of everything I did to it. Yes the steerlites made a very noticeable difference.
