oil consumption

i went out to plow snow today and decided i better check oil since ive been lacking on it for a while.. when i checked it oil didnt show on the dipstick. i ended up adding a quart to get it back to full... now the 700h1 is a 2 quart system and i was a quart low but no engine knocking so i think im safe...

now to find out where its going... I have decided if i need rings im going with a cam and a 11:1 piston if i need a cylinder it will be a 750 after a BBK but now my question is, is it possible to check where the oil is going without tearing it completely apart and if i go cam with HC piston and BBK will the crank handle the added pressure?

Check for visible leaks.
Many engines simply consume oil.
Any smoke noticable from the exhaust?
Oil in coolant? If no.
Change it using an OEM filter and some high
quality synthetics. Monitor oil level from that point
on. If it's half a quart every couple of hundred miles
or months. Just top it off. A few bucks is easier than
digging for fixes. All engines consume oil during normal
operation and will consume more if driven under
severe service. My quad would fall under extreme
conditions. Hot/cold climates. Extended high RPM
scenerios. Climb any big hills? Plowing?
All tough on an engine.

It's used a quart since fall with limited miles since then. It's plowed snow but nothing too harsh. See no leaks and can't tell reading exhaust since its so cold out

Maybe ur just too hard on it.

Mine uses oil, but maybe a half qt between changes. And you know how I treat mine. Lol

What kinda oil do you use? Different brands burn off faster than others.

Guess I wouldn't blame it on the oil than.

But temps, if it was a lot colder this last time you checked it vs last time it would show a diff in level. But wouldn't think a whole qt.

Might be able to see it on the spark plug if its burning it too.

if you do a cylinder leak down test that will tell you if your rings are worn,, usally the 400s will start so smoke a little when on throttle loading the eng...

but before you do that try a comp test and see what it is vs specs in the shop manual..

You have to figure out if it is rings or valves. Do a compression check, then put some oil in the spark plug hole and do compression check again. If the number is much higher it is your rings. If you give it the business while acceleration and see smoke out of the exhaust it is the valves.

I think...

If it makes you feel better, for cars, a new 911 will still be in spec if it burns a quart every 600 miles!

For the GM 8.1L "normal oil consumption" is 1qt per 100 gallons of fuel.
