Lower ball joint came loose

During a ride last night my lower right ball joint came out. The bolt that pinches the knuckle to the ball joint was snug, the end of the joint that goes into the knuckle doesn't appear to be boogered up. The ball joint is in good condition and is not broken.

How the sam hill this happened I don't know. Anybody ever had it happen? I could have been tragic had this occured at speed.

All I did was to back out the bolt, stick it back in and re-installed the bolt to complete the ride. I am scared it might occur again?

Did it come apart like in two pieces? Or the large end came out of the a arm?

If it came apart its badly worn and will happen again. If the large part came out of the a arm and would still pivot then you've lost the c clip that retains it.

Man I'm glad you wern't hurt Cap! The bolt won't let the shaft on the ball joint out and therefore thats confusing to me. hmmmmm?????
Sounds like the stem came out of the knuckle, past the bolt that holds it in??

How did the joint stem make it past the bolt if the bolt is still in there tight?

if you cant get the stem tightened fully down it will push its way past. There is alot of pressure on there so if it wiggles loose it will push past ive had it happen

Answered in order:
Pondtunes; the stem came out of the knuckle, the ball joint is otherwise 100% intact. I did not lose the jesus clip that holds the big end of the joint into the a arm.

Savage: I have had to do that on two other Mud Pro's due to stripped threads on the knuckle. BUT: Even with a nut and bolt, you cannot close the gap on the knuckle and more than 100% closed.

Holeshot: Home run...it appears that is precisely what happened.

I am thinking that perhaps that portion of the bolt may have become worn OR (I am ashamed to admit) that I may not have hammered it all the way in when I last changed the axle.

Had the same thing happen to me last year. I figured that I must not have had the stem in all the way after changing bearings. I was thinking that if I didn't get the stem all the way in, the groove wouldn't line up with the bolt, and the clamp could not seat properly around the stem. It's jsut a theory, but its all I got right now. Made sence in my head when I tried to explain it to myself. Lol.

The bolts that came on mine were completely threaded and the threads were worn down (likely from rubbing against the ball joint stem when tightening it down) so I bought some new bolts that had a plain shoulder (no threads) where it contacted the ball joint stem and also put a lock nut on the bolt. No more issues.
