ATV: 2007 Arctic Cat 650 H1 TBX
Issue: Flashing "Volt" error on LCD pod and no LCD display other the flashing "Volt" msg and when I shut the atv off at the key, it still runs so use kill switch to shut it down.

Just bought this unit a few weeks ago and the LCD pod was working fine even though the battery was initially dead(Had been sitting for 3 months). Jumped it and it started fine. THe LCD worked fine. Got it home and put a trickle 2amp charger on it to charge it overnight. The unit started fine the next morning but had no lcd except for flashing "volt" error on screen.

Have checked the battery out(new battery) and it tests at about 12.4 volts without ATV running and about 13.4 when the ATV is running. Checked all fuses and they are good. Not sure how to check the diodes in the fuse box.....

Checked the Accessory plug and it tests at 12 volts. I am not seeing any issues at the connections to the lcd pod or at any of the other connections(ie. voltage reg, CDI, etc.) Looked at wiring and do not see any tears in the electrical tape wrappings. One thing that I am not sure if it matters is that I do not have a taillight and have the three wires taped separately with electrical tape. The atv seems to run fine and the cooling fan works as well. Ideas? I am plain tapped out....

Welcome to the forum!

This is a common problem with AC machines when the batttery dies. The most common "quick-fix" is to pull one of the battery cables off and remove the green 30amp accessory fuse for about 5 min. This RE-SETS the LCD pod's error code memory.

THAT SHOULD FIX IT.

You mentioned your battery is reading 13.4 volts when running? - That may be too low. My TRV reads 14.2 at idle and my battery(s) reads 13.1 when sitting. (battery maintainer 12hrs a day w/dual bat set-up) Your stator may be weak, thus throwing the "VOLT" code but I'd bet your battery is failing.

Hope this helps!

Oh don't forget "MAN-LAW".....we need pics!! Not too many TBX guys here......

Stock Battery?

Reason I ask is, if it is, you're getting ready to try the warranty out on that battery.

The deal is, the deductible is $50 on the cat warranty - So, ask yourself are you comfortable sticking $50 into a battery that ,in quality alone, is just like the cheapest one Wal-Mart sells?
For a little extra, you can get an AGM Battery (look it up) that will last probably as long as you own the 4 wheeler.

I do know that if it drops down at start lower than 11 or 12 volt, it will VOLT and not start - On the 650H1, the trouble is, you don't come stock with a crank rope - my 700EFI does and they'll all start and run fine low but, you can't push it and boosting is usually not a great option... Slow charge it and see but, I'd lay odds that you're a few stops away from getting pulled out to go get a battery...

Save you some headache, go shopping now...

Orielly Auto has a good AGM that fits tight, in the 500, 650 and 700 works well... Wal-Mart is now stocking and selling them - take yours in to match up - Remember AGM...
And there is Always a bike place or online to get an Odesy brand - little more costly but all built nearly the same...

Hope you can get the issue resolved and there isn't a short... Likely it's just a weakening battery...

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I will try that "reset" to see if anything happens first. Even though it is a new battery(the original owner got it 4 months ago and it sat for the last 3 months) and it tested as good, I did not run a load test on it. I will run it down to the mechanic downtown to have him do that. If it load tests out OK and is fully charged, then I am wondering what else. If it is a bad battery, I will look up AGM and Odessey as a replacement since I will be mounting a winch on it and using it for plowing this winter and pulling in the lifts/docks this fall.

Any idea on why the unit still runs when i shut the key off? Related to battery you think?

Also, I will post some pics as soon as I figure this out and get it cleaned up a little.

I'd hazzard a guess and say your ignition switch is bad. Does it START with the key off and the kill switch in RUN mode? If it does I'd start at the most obvious.

The key switch has some contacts that are likely out of alignment, maybe the key got wet - froze and has the black part on back nearly off - Will have a crack around the bottom - The switch with new keys isn't that bad to replace, price wise that is...

You can test it, unscrew the ring-nut around the key slot and push it down out of the plastic, you can see the back of it and see what I'm referring to... Has the connectors on the back of it... Remember is you do remove them where they came from LOL.... But, one is lights on and one is engine start - one side should be all is off... - Kill switch is routed there was well to ground and over-ride the key.

- Test#1, turn key to on and see if, with kill switch on, if it will try to crank, if it does - Go buy a new switch, it's bad.... - It will draw the battery down over time in it's current state.
Kill switch should kill it and not allow power to start it.

Buy the Odyssey battery if you replace your stock one...Youill never need another one for the life of your bike and you wont see volt on your pod again.

Well, I changed out the battery with a new AGM. Checked the key switch and it looked fine. It would not start with the key off so I think the switch is fine. I hooked everything up and I still get the same result that I have been getting which is it showing a flashing volt error on the LCD pod. I pulled the green 30amp fuse and took off one battery lead, waited for 5 minutes and still have the same result. One question, everytime(even since day one) that I hook the battery up, I hear clicking near the fuse box or the voltage regulator...I can't tell which. Is that normal?

Any other ideas????

Additional info..... I tore most of the atv apart so I could look at every piece of the wiring harness. I found two things that maybe somebody can help me address. One, I noticed that with the battery hooked up and the volt error message flashing, the key switch was very warm and when I pulled the IGN fuse, the volt light stopped flashing. When I put the fuse back in, I was hearing a click(like when I first was hooking the battery back up) and then the volt error would start flashing again. I am not sure if that is normal and if it is normal for the key switch assembly to be so warm even though the atv is not running. As I had mentioned before, I found no cracks in the plastic key switch case and the atv would not start without the key being turned on.

Second, I found under the lcd pod assembly, where the wiring goes down through the frame, a two wire hookup (orange and black wires I believe) that was not connected to anything as if it was a spare hookup for something...any idea what that is for?
