the reverse thing is a safety, think it is timed for about 30 seconds. It will also happen if you are backing up and it feels something it doesn't like, a bump or backfire kind of thing. If I remember correctly and you are done backing up when it happens, just push the button for forward again and it will be fine. But won't go into reverse again until you shut it off to reset it.

Straight from the operator's manual

2. On 2000 models, the reverse function
will cancel if operated in
reverse longer than 45 seconds.
Whenever the reverse function has
been canceled, the engine must be
run in the forward mode for a minimum
of 60 seconds at 2000 RPM
before the reverse function can be used again

Google : 'Arctic Cat snowmobile reverse accident lawsuit'

You will understand why they have more safety features. And by the way its the most stupid law suit I have ever heard of....

Limiting reverse is about cooling, not safety. The 570 engine runs backwards for reverse vs. a transmission change, and as a result the fan runs backwards. The airflow isn't sufficient to cool, so it's limited and why you have to switch back to forward for 60 seconds above 2000 rpm. Need to lose some heat before you can reverse the engine again.
